Future is a living nightmare for purists—an artist that has tossed rappity rap aside in favor of reinventing the genre to his whims. His sing-songy raps are essentially extended choruses, and he has contributed to songs like YG’s “Racks,” Lil Wayne’s “Love Me,” and Ace Hood’s “Bugatti,” aka songs that probably make the late Big L roll over in his grave. But, Future as a solo artist is more complex than the raucous anthems he produces. He has made a conscious decision to (for the most part) crank out music that appeals to the masses, but his approach is new and fresh, and his commitment to providing slivers of introspection in his records is refreshing in a commercial artist.
Plain and simple, Future knows how to make hits, and he prefers to make them. The first single off his sophomore album Honest (formerly referred to as Future Hendrix) is titled, well, “Honest,” and it finds the rapper trying his best to be sincere about the “rich nigga life” he leads. “I was gonna lie to ya, but I had to tell the truth,” he croons in his auto-tune laced voice. The song is as catchy as it is simple, and there are traces of the Rocko smash, “U.O.E.N.O.,” here. The falsetto is just icing on the cake. “Honest” is produced by DJ Spinz and Metro Boomin.
