Aussie producer Motez first appeared in select sets by adding tasteful deep grooves to a cross-section of pop-R&B hybrids, including Frank Ocean’s “Thinkin Bout You”, Justin Timberlake’s “Like I Love You”, and of course the Mark Morrison throwback “Return of the Mack”. While his original sound borrows similar soulful vibes, they add a much-needed bass punch, landing Motez a release on the Shadow Child and Kry Wolf label Food Music.
The title track “Ride Roof Back” features mellow lo-fi tones with a ghetto vocal sample, but slides to a new dimension of sub-bass percussion after a sneaky beat drop. It’s a prime example of sexy meets jackin’ house, which is no wonder it’s popped up in sets from Justin Martin and Flume.
On the flip side is “Take Off”, a light-hearted tech house tune that, despite its bouncy whistle riff, never seems to lose its rhythm. With another upcoming release on Say Wat Records, don’t sleep on Motez as a future breakout talent.
