Artist Remixed is back to bring you the milky manipulations of your favourite singles. From the increase in bedroom producers there has been an even bigger increase in remixes. Artists are now making entire EP’s and LP’s devoted purely to remixes, something unheard of just a decade ago. One search on Soundcloud for an original piece of work leaves you strolling through pages of unfinished productions and poorly structured remixes. Yet, out of all the mashups, edits, screw ups, and improvements there is still gold to be found. Artist Remixed is your guide to bring you straight to the cream. Why search through pages and pages when EARMILK can sift through the dross for you? This weekly feature will showcase old and new artists of all genres, yet never an original piece. RAP REMIXES
Rap remixes are not featured often yet they usually deliver an elegant verse over a beat you can smoke to, so sit back and let these lyrics roll over you. One that specifically stuck out to me this week was Nostalgia Bound‘s remix, it keeps the signature memorizing sound of “Change” using the original melody yet adds a completely new feel. You can’t stop but listen to the lyrics as they come from this Aussie native.
EXPERIMENTAL REMIXES
If it’s instrumental, ambient, experimental, or just a strange sounding tune you’ll most likely find it here, straight filtered for the interesting and artists trying new sounds. Keeping it heavier than ever, this section starts off with Orikami‘s remix of “More Than You Thought”. It leaves you with little to compare to the original but still keeps it fresh enough for you to dance to. Akouo‘s remix is more of a instrumental remix, which features a brilliant rework of the melody. Finally Vindata‘s remix of “Sleepless”, smooth and dream-like it still has enough change overall with a silky tweak of the beat and a perfect transition into the next genre category.
DREAMSCAPE REMIXES
Perfectly balanced and relaxing, these remixes should take you somewhere you’re not, uplifting you above your own element they hopefully will transport you in a daze. Firstly, we have Charles Murdoch‘s remix of “Sleepless”, it is uplifting and poppy with a warped effect on the vocals as it weaves them through the chorus. Swagula‘s remix is quite the opposite of anything remote to the word “swag”. On the contrary, it is a hypnotizing remix that slows down the original and gives it an uplifting build that works its way back into the classic sounds of Flume. Ferris’s remix is one of the only remixes of my personal favourite songs that stuck out. It is darker than the usual dreamscape sound yet still delivers a shaky dreamlike synth.
DEEP HOUSE REMIXES
From the drinks that keep pouring tell 5 am, to the girls that keep dancing tell 6 am and the nights that keep going tell 7 am; these eerie tracks will guide you through it all. Firstly Flex Cop‘s remix which is soft and sensual until slowly but surely he creeps into the lyrics of “Sleepless” as he keeps you swaying with a smooth melody. Erkka‘s remix is slow and a mix between progressive house and ambient pop, it keeps the vocals vividly echoing along side the beat.
TRAP REMIXES
From air horns to 808 kicks, this section is purely for those tracks that get you with your elbows turnt up. Starting this section we have Ta-Ku‘s remix of “Left Alone”, which is a signature sounding Ta-Ku track, tweaking the vocals and adding an eerie rhythm over top of the original. Kaytranada‘s remix is arguably trap but it seemed fitting right beside Ta-Ku’s tune. It’s not the typical sound you would expect from Kaytranada yet still sends shivers as he keeps the vocals yet changes the beat drastically.
DNB REMIXES
From 170-180bpm this section features the straight filth and the memorizing slower speeds that still keep you shaking. Run DMT‘s remix starts off slow yet becomes aggressive as it switches between the vocals of “Sleepless” and a fast hitting chord. Makk D‘s remix starts off sounding oddly similar to Skrillex yet quickly becomes the recognizable “Left Alone”. Lastly, we have Gedde’s remix, which starts slow yet comes heavy with the beat just layered over the original tune. Around half way he uses his own signature sound and completely takes over.
DUBSTEP REMIXES
Whether it’s filthy, greasy or ambient bass this section will feature it all and expand into sub-genres depending on the artist remixed. This week there’s only one dubstep remix that really caught my attention and I loosely place it in this category. It comes from Grynpyret who just made this freely downloadable, gaining itself a well deserved place on this list. Hitting hard, sounding very similar to Koan Sound it takes a more aggressive track by Flume, “On Top” and gives it a punch.
MASHUPS
Whether it’s two songs or a list of hits, these tracks combine artist’s signature sounds together to make a mix of noise. Featured on last weeks Artist Remixed – Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre I have OFFTAPIA’s same mix of “Drop it like it’s hot” with “Ezra” since it’s just that good. Who knew that these two songs would fit so well together, almost synchronized the lyrics fit perfectly into place with Flume’s classic track.
OVERALL FAVOURITE REMIX
An absolute treat, LKid completely kills his remix of “Holdin On”. From start to finish it has you moving, it completely grips the original and throttles it with a sensual and groovy beat that manages to use other vocals that fit in perfectly. Using the same chorus over and over he entrances the listener with his sweet rework of Flume. I still can’t get enough of this track, it has me constantly coming back and replaying it again and again.
