For certain producers, trap music is an over the top showoff contest to see who can sprinkle in the most 808 riffs and drops in the most bass. Its fast ascent is asterisked by the at times obnoxious predictability of the genre’s structure. For others, though, trap music is an opportunity to apply bass music talents to a different set of production parameters.
Such is the case with Feed Me’s latest original, “Rat Trap.” Originally debuted in the UK producer’s Essential Mix, this release is a brooding combination of distorted electro and bouncy basslines with the odd turntable scratch. It holds the booming kick drums of any strong trap production, but focuses less on the party build up and more on the story told through song. With this track serving as the first single to the upcoming Calamari Tuesday full-length, there’s no telling which direction Jon Gooch or his green monster alter ego will take for the rest of the album. At minimum, it’s safe to say the 15-track release due out on October 15 will be a journey into Feed Me’s world.
