You might think Jimmy Tait is a male. Or maybe a male-fronted band. But rather, the Australian quintet can credit its name to front-woman Sarah Retallick’s late grandfather. And appropriately, this group makes music that sounds a little bit retro and a whole lot classic rock, as you can hear on their album Golden (released October 4 on Spunk Records).
On the standout single “Eyes,” Retallick’s alto has steady, plodding and haunting quality reminiscent of Jefferson Airplane’s Grace Slick. The song passes freely through the modern-day gateway thanks to the electric guitar rifts and supporting synth – and we can’t help but think it has the fundamental framework of a signature Jenny Lewis anthem: soulful southern rock carried by a killer female vox.
So while the hook repeats the lyrics, “It’s all in your eyes” over and over, it’s definitely also in our ears – and we’re liking the little piece of the past excavated for us to premiere.
