Have you ever had one of those days where you hear some new music and it completely blows you out of the water? Well today is one of those days for me, when I got sent the new EP from Cali producer Lee Bannon, Place Crushers. The EP is more like a mix, spanning over twenty minutes in length and showcasing a more experimental side to Bannon.
The Sacramento native has recently signed to legendary London label Ninja Tune and Place Crushers is the platform for him to show us what we can expect from here on in, until his album releases at the end of 2013. I’ve only really heard Lee Bannon productions in a hip-hop context before, from his work with Joey Bada$$ and Ab-Soul, so I was pleasantly surprised when I pressed play and was hit by an eclectic wall of sound that was different to what I was expecting. The twenty-two minute long track has an array of atmospheric synths, minimalistic beats and beautifully chopped up vocals, that keeps your attention from the first minute until the last.
The Place Crushers EP sounds exactly like something that Ninja Tune would release, and adding Bannon to their roster is definitely a shrewd move from a label that has brought us the likes of Bonobo and Lorn. It’s going to be an extremely interesting few months leading up to the release of his Ninja Tune label debut album, and we can expect to hear more dope experimental tracks from Bannon very soon.
