So, who in the world is Jimmy? A good question for Chicago based rap collective Pivot Gang, comprised of brothers Saba and Joseph Chilliams, their cousin John Walt, MFn Melo, Frsh Waters, Kevo B, and Sway $waLa. Yesterday, they dropped their first mixtape, JIMMY, which is without a doubt an ear pleasing project that’s thought provoking and full of character. Pivot Gang knows when to get serious and when to slip in some humor, and they do it all with an unwavering explosion of energy. With the mixtape’s first track “Jimmy,” you’re thrown into a mix of dark beats and a lyrical buildup that gradual increases in intensity. Now that you’re prepped for their lyrical prowess and vitality, ride the wave. Each track offers something creatively different, just try listening to “500” and “You Know Me” back to back. You’ll see what I mean. Obviously, you can bump this mixtape however you want to, but I recommended running through it in order at least once, as the different sounds are well organized that way.
Chicago has been getting serious buzz with the many hip hop artists who have been showcasing their talents recently, but there’s always room for more. Always. So make way for Pivot Gang. Each member is undeniably talented and armed with a knack for projecting his own relatable personality through his craft. So when you put JIMMY on the speakers, get ready to laugh a little, get ready to contemplate your life a little, and get ready to turn up a little. There’s a bit of everything for everyone, so here’s your chance to relish in it.
With that said, keep your eyes and ears on Pivot Gang. They just might be coming to a hood near you.
