Daft Punk

Daft Punk’s “Da Funk” is unquestionably one of the most significant dance tracks of our time, from its funky bassline to hypnotic acid loops to the dog in the music video no one can forget. Still, it’s airtime in DJ sets remains rare due to its 111 BPM tempo and overall dense composition. One of the few moments I recall hearing any sort of version was during the back half of Catz ‘n Dogz’ Boiler Room set. A then unknown edit gave some nice breathing room between the eclectic techno that surrounded it, but given the magnitude of the artist, I never thought this would see the light of day.

Out of nowhere, the Polish duo has released their version of “Da Funk” for free download via their website. It’s a cheeky edit, sounding more like a classical music rehearsal than a tribute to the French robots. Still, the melody is just too familiar to keep folks from smiling. What seemingly starts as a monotone note breaks down into what sounds like the exact same composition as Daft Punk’s original. The drums, the hi-hats, and the top lines all seem to be in sync, but with replacement instruments. Might not be for Daft traditionalists, but definitely something clever for the right head-turning moment.
