Is it too early to crown g house as the breakout sound of 2014? While it’s more of a blend of existing styles rather than an innovative new genre, it’s hard to ignore the momentum around the deep house’s meaner brother. As fans continue to search for a different groove away from the main stage, gritty hip hop savants are slowly creeping into the dance realm as well. Merge the two and you start to piece together the gangsta house movement, which has gone through cycles of popularity but never made its way to the forefront.

With established artists like Sharam Jey and James Dax each dabbling in the rap-influenced house vibes, the French connection of Amine Edge & Dance are leading the charge of the new school G House revival. Their latest release, Our G House Sauce EP, pulls four recognizable pieces from both fan favourites and underground realms of hip hop – all of which share the same name as the original samples. The four-track offering includes versions of Frank Ocean’s “Lost”, Tyga’s “Rack City”, Missy Elliot’s “Let It Bump”, and Zebra Katz’s “Ima Read That Bitch”. This isn’t the first look of hip hop samples in Amine Edge & Dance tracks, either. Releases like “Halfway Crooks” and “Pussy Magnet” all borrow famous samples and, regardless of the era of the original, make gangster rap work seamlessly over a four-four beat. Across all tracks off of Our G-House Sauce, the duo use pitched down vocals and a bass twang that would rattle any live show – most recently at HARD Day of the Dead earlier this month. The Gary Richards stamp of approval doesn’t stop there for Amine Edge & Dance, with a remix of Destructo’s Higher due out over the holidays as well as an appearance on Holy Ship!!! early next year.
