Reworking MS MR‘s gem “Hurricane” into an 80’s dance party is a welcomed, yet unexpected surprise. The swooning New Yorkers initially kept their visual imagery under wraps, opt for the route of enigmatic anonymity over public gratification nearly a year ago, but have since exposed themselves in support of their debut full length Secondhand Rapture (May 14). Having released three singles off of the album, “Hurricane” draws a sketch of what to expect on the lighter end, demonstrating a sound that isn’t far off from Florence and the Machine or Lana Del Ray.
As for the rework, all bets are off when CHVRCHES come to the table. Their clever approach at a trending style has garnered widespread acclaim from across the musical spectrum over the past year. Trademark instrumentals support Lizzy Plapinger’s cooing vocals, which hit with enthusiastic punctuality when paired with CHVRCHES’ heavy electronic presence.
For reference, the video of “Hurricane” is fairly demonstrative of where the makeover stems from, as its slower pace and bizarre visuals make for an experience as equally entertaining as the remix itself.
