These are the mashes that are worth hearing, so stop your searching and instead settle down at your computer… turn up your speakers… and get ready for that sweet nectar that only EARMILK can give ya. Let’s GO!
I’ve been on a Kendrick Lamar kick as of late. Maybe it’s due to my re-listening of his Good Kid M.A.A.D City album, but I’m not complaining. Naturally, this carried over to some of my mashup selections, and 2 made the final cut: Duncan Gerow‘s “Sing About Me” and DJ 21azy‘s “She Needs Novacane”. There’s something captivating about the pitched down vocals of Lamar on Gerow’s mash with Dolor. It’s a mellow A + B mashup that emphasizes Lamar’s flow and does him justice. DJ 21azy‘s mashup pairs Grammy winner Frank Ocean and Lamar for a quicker paced mashup that stills maintains the sensual R&B flair of Ocean. They make a great pairing, and personally I’d love to see, err hear, them do more official tracks together.
I’ve got to give props to the European mashup crowd. If I’m looking for a mashup that is a bit more funky and not so radio friendly, then I’ll most likely find something appealing across the pond. This week’s selection comes from German artist DJ Y alias JY with his Robin Thicke and Duffy inspired, “Blurred Mercy”. With the sultry vocals of British songstress Duffy providing the vocal meat of the mashup, Robin Thicke’s “Blurred” serve as the perfect backdrop that makes this mash upbeat, fun, and rhythmic. One of the most intersting mashups for this week is Sample Gee‘s combination of 50 Cent and Nesian Mystik resulting in a mashup rework of “Candy Shop”. We’re instantly greeted with spanish guitars from Mystik’s “What’s Next” before quite surprisingly (for the first listen) 50 starts attempting to “seduce” us. It’s a completely different sound than I’m used to from the original “Candy Shop”, but I was loving it. Maybe a little less 50, but hey, I was digging the production from the New Zealand hip-hop group.
