Ever wondered what Tame Impala would sound like if they were to add a gritty jam-band tone to their spaced-out vibe? Well, don’t waste time thinking about it and let the Australian five-piece Pond demonstrate. Having put out four albums as a group, Pond’s newest release “Giant Tortoise” is a flangered-out distorted jumble to which an airy lo-fi vibe softens the load.

Accredit the familiar sound to the fact that Pond borrows two of Tame Impala’s instrumentalists (Bassist Nick Allbrook and Drummer Jay Watson) and often feature Impala’s front-man Kevin Parker, who also mixes their albums. While Parker carries Tame Impala with a laid-back demeanor, Allbrook is anything but when fronting Pond. It is obvious that Allbrook has his chill vibe down pat (check him out sharing singing duties in covering Outkast‘s “Prototype” here) however, in Pond he injects energy into their live sets as he expresses himself through the use of spasmodic body language.
