Southern California noise-punks No Age have found their softer side on “An Impression,” the latest cut from forthcoming LP An Object due out August 10 via Sub Pop. The track solidifies the fact that the duo of Randy Randall and Dean Spunt are easily capable of producing more than fast-paced, high-energy punk rock, which they do very well.
“An Impression” finds the L.A. twosome exploring their more subtly artistic musical ambitions, even offering a string section over a relatively simple guitar melody. There are no drums on the track, just an understated fuzz that seems to permeate throughout. The word “versatility” is probably not used terribly often to describe two-piece punk rock acts, but on “An Impression,” No Age certainly demonstrate this trait. A cursory listen to the early release from An Object suggests that No Age’s third full length album could very well be their most ambitious to date.
