It’s hard to deny that where we grow up has much to do with who we are as a person. There are essays and thesis’ done on the profound effects of one’s environment and how that can meld someones life. Eric Dingus is no exception. Hailing from Austin, Texas, one of the premier music meccas of the US, Eric’s certainly a product of his environment. At just 18, he has already made a name for himself as a hip hop and electronic producer and has released countless original tracks as well as some pretty spot on remixes.
In his tracks he samples things as varied as video game sounds to 50’s jazz. When mixing, he is careful to not incorporate any overused samples. He also makes an effort to change the role of the sounds from their original songs to his creations. Above all, his goal is to keep his stuff original and he succeeds. In his newest drop, Dingus remixes british rapper Danny Seth‘s “Toronto +”. The original in and of itself is a unique platform in that its not the original at all. “Toronto”, was first released on Seths “Prespliffs Vol. II mixtape”, and was remixed back in August to include Last Night In Paris (think Odd Future, but in England). The new creation was “Toronto +”.
Eric Dingus’s take on this track acts as the next obvious step and is the best yet. Opening with ethereal synths reminiscent of the trademark dark atmospheric texture of Purity Ring, Danny Seth’s unique vocals are smoothly and seamlessly spread over them. With the inclusion of a looped clap track and some well placed low end in the form of a bass-heavy back beat, the result is both organic and drowzy. Take a listen below and see what you think. I have a feeling we should be expecting a lot more from Dingus in the near future and I’m looking forward to every last sound.
