Homeless Paul Oakenfold in Los Angeles Bus Depot

Paul Oakenfold, once the #1 DJ in the world, was photographed drunken, unkempt, and apparently homeless in a Los Angeles bus depot. My how he has fallen.

His latest release Greatest Hits & Remixes, out Oct. 23 on Perfecto must not being doing too well. This collection features his remixes of Justin Timberlake, U2, Madonna, Smashing Pumpkins, Radiohead and others.

(editor’s note: We have reports that this photo might not actually be Paul Oakenfold but rather one of the cast members of ABC’s new sitcoms “Cavemen”. We’ll keep you posted.)

MaxMSP5Cycling 74 has announced Max/MSP 5.0, the next-generation of their popular media development tools. This version offers a completely redesigned multi-processing kernel and a streamlined development environment built on a platform-independent foundation. With a new patcher interface, searchable database of objects and examples, integrated documentation and new tutorials, the new Max user will find a smoother learning curve while experienced users will see improved productivity.

This is Max for the next twenty years, CEO David Zicarelli declared. In addition to a modern infrastructure designed to support today’s multi-core processors and tomorrow’s operating systems, Max 5 features a new UI intended to aid in the expression of complex ideas in a fluid manner. Max’s concept of interactive graphical programming has enhanced greatly with their new presentation mode, which de-couples programming logic from user interface construction, allowing clearer patches as well as richer user interfaces. The idea behind Max 5 is to create a new paradigm so the users both advance and new can take advantage of their unique working environment.

Max version 5 will be available first quarter 2008 and, if used with its digital audio and video extensions, will require updated versions of MSP and Jitter. An upgrade price for Max 5 has not been announced.

The Return of Dogzilla

djnth | Clubs, DJs & Producers, Music | Thursday, October 4th, 2007

Dogzilla

Dogzilla’s Alex Patterson will be playing a rare US gig in Phoenix, Arizona on December 1, 2007.

After what seems like an eternity the mighty Dogzilla return with their latest opus, the anthemic Frozen.

Carrying on from last years legendary Without You the Dogz have developed their sound along the electronica meets rocky road combining soaring melodies with grungy guitars and driving dancefloor beats. Add the Dogz own vocals and you’ve got Frozen, a modern anthem for a nu-skool clubbing generation.

Along with the radio edits Dogzilla turn in three mixes, Original, Club and Dub that are all based around their trademark sound. Remix duties fall to Germany’s Wippenberg who serves up a pulsing, mutant electro-trance mix that’s irresistible. Frozen is the fourth single from Dogzilla, expect a fifth single in the winter followed by the debut Dogzilla album in 2008.

Dance Download Alliance Forms Against Beatport

Dance Download Alliance Forms Against Beatport

Seven UK dance music download stores have joined together to create the Dance Download Alliance (DDA). The seven members, 3Beat Digital, Audiojelly, DJdownload, Juno Download, TrackitDown, Trax2Burn and Xpressbeats, have joined together to counteract a proposal offered to dance labels and distributors by Beatport who offers an exclusivity arrangement, as an option, on all new releases from labels if they chose to participate.
The UK online dance music stores that make up the Dance Download Alliance

Is exclusivity the Dance Download Alliance focus? Or is it something more?
The DDA has been quoted as saying that “we believe that the short and long term effects of such a proposal will damage the dance music industry as a whole. Consequences for labels, artists and distributors, as well as download retailers and ultimately customers, could be severe.”
The DDA is threatening to dump labels who “join a blanket exclusivity arrangement” since it “would not be economically viable for us to continue to stock repertoire from labels” who [accept said arrangement].” The letter to participating labels also goes on to warn: “The loss of the support and promotion of seven major UK online dance retailers (as well as our many affiliate stores) will undoubtedly have a major impact on your label’s and artists’ profiles across the web, as well as your ability to maximise additional revenue streams such as compilations and licensing. Leaving customers without the choice of where to buy your music could also increase the chances of your music being traded through P2P networks stimulating a rise in dance music piracy.”

Banding together the UK’s leading online retailers to fight Beatport is a savvy move for this new coalition since their combined power far outweighs individual efforts. Having access to up-to-the-minute releases from labels is the lifeblood of Dance music-oriented retailers, both online and offline. The seven retailers are determined to not let this new exclustivity option succeed, which would significantly harm their businesses, and may have taken a page out of the recent online royalty rate hike battle that found instant strength in numbers. “The Dance Download Alliance believes that fair competition and consumer choice are foundations for a healthy and flourishing dance download market,” claims the DDA. However, if you read between the lines, you can smell the desperation. The alliance is painting Beatport as a company who’s following Apple’s cutthroat tactics in order to solidify their top position, and to gain the upper hand against their competitors. Leveraging market position has allowed iTunes to not only dominate the market, but also to control pricing. In addition, prominent positioning on the retailer’s site often makes a significant impact on the fiscal results of a new release, so many labels are forced to play ball. However, this isn’t the case in terms of Beatport.

FutureMusic has learned that Beatport’s exclusivity on new releases is simply one of three tiers that the retailer offers labels. The labels can choose to participate, and are not being strongarmed into a “blanket exclusivity arrangement” as the UK Dance Download Alliance has alleged. In addition, labels who chose not to participate in the exclusive option are not being punished by Beatport, as some have also suggested. The Future: The DDA’s retailers also provide the backend for the Ministry Of Sound, M8, Judgemusic and DJ Magazine’s online stores, which adds some juice to their position, but also unveils some behind the scenes politics. The exclusivity option that the DDA is spinning does have a small chance of hurting the US download concern, but since they are so far ahead of their competitors in both customers and technology, it may not make a difference to dance record labels who want to give their releases the best possible chance for economic success in this over-saturated market.

What’s even more hypocritical is that many of the labels that make up the DDA, beg popular labels for exclusive tracks, which undermines their argument and position. So what’s the real story?
Another take is that the Alliance was formed, not so much as to combat exclusivity, but for survival. Beatport is annihilating most of their competitors in the Dance music download space, and gaining ground all the time. New record labels want to be on Beatport, and are joining the other online retailers just for a little icing on the cake. Now that these UK retailers are finding themselves insignificant, they may be doing whatever it takes to stay afloat.

Limited Run of reacTable Synth Coming Soon?

djnth | DJs & Producers, Hardware, Music, Software, Studio Gear | Thursday, August 9th, 2007

reacTable

After making the rounds on YouTube and various blogs the reacTable synth was spotted by Bjork and later incorporated into her live show which brought a large amount of attention to this unique hands-on synthesizer. The developers are now looking into a short production run of the innovative machine.  We look forward to seeing this in some upcoming shows!

From reacTable:

The reactable is a collaborative electronic music instrument with a tabletop tangible multi-touch interface. Several simultaneous performers share complete control over the instrument by moving and rotating physical objects on a luminous round table surface. By moving and relating these objects, representing components of a classic modular synthesizer, users can create complex and dynamic sonic topologies, with generators, filters and modulators, in a kind of tangible modular synthesizer or graspable flow-controlled programming language.

The instrument was developed by a team of digital luthiers under the direction of Dr. Sergi Jordà. The “Interactive Sonic Systems” team is working in the Music Technology Group within the Audiovisual Institute at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona Spain. Its main activities concentrate on the design of new musical interfaces, such as tangible music instruments and musical applications for mobile devices.

The reactable intends to be:

  • collaborative: several performers (locally or remotely)
  • intuitive: zero manual, zero instructions
  • sonically challenging and interesting
  • learnable and masterable (even for children)
  • suitable for novices (installations) and advanced electronic musicians (concerts)

The reactable hardware is based on a translucent, round multi-touch surface. A camera situated beneath the table, continuously analyzes the surface, tracking the player’s finger tips and the nature, position and orientation of physical objects that are distributed on its surface. These objects represent the components of a classic modular synthesizer, the players interact by moving these objects, changing their distance, orientation and the relation to each other. These actions directly control the topological structure and parameters of the sound synthesizer. A projector, also from underneath the table, draws dynamic animations on its surface, providing a visual feedback of the state, the activity and the main characteristics of the sounds produced by the audio synthesizer.
